Presenter Mark Wallace, Beauty Will Save the World
Mark’s presentation outline:
How do we become resilient and faithful in a time of environmental hopelessness and climate catastrophe? A spiritual celebration of Earth as sacred offering – not market commodity – is the answer to the ecocidal despair that now characterizes Western society. Today we live in a world where we value human beings as highly evolved rational persons, other organisms as non-sentient servants of our needs and desires, and everything else as exploitable inert matter. This mindset, rooted in settler colonial society, has led to ruinous ecological consequences insofar as it privileges the acquisition of wealth above the wellbeing of all other lifeforms, humankind and otherkind alike. Alternatively, the contemporary revival of the Indigenous worldview called animism – the belief that all things are interdependent and alive with personhood and sacred value – has kindled a re-enchantment of the world as worthy of human love and devotion. We will envision this new but ancient disposition toward Mother Earth by way of biblical portraits of sacred landscapes, Martin Buber’s I and Thou animist philosophy, Peter Wohlleben’s emotional encounters with The Hidden Life of Trees, and Leslie Marmon Silko’s Native American celebration of the sacred hoop. With these sources in mind, we will discuss how genuine economics consists of reciprocal gift-giving, not maximization of profits; true politics is the cultivation of community, not the subjugation of the voiceless; wholistic education focuses on soulcraft, not the acquisition of knowledge as such; and healthy religion is a journey toward restoration and kinship with all beings, not subscription to a body of beliefs that denies the life-giving beauty and wonder that encircles us all.

DAY 2 Resources
This, from our friend, Alan Levin:
Last weekend I went to an inspiring conference on “Consciousness and Climate” sponsored by Kosmos Journal. It was held in the lovely little town of Media, PA., a town that is working to put many of the ideas that the conference brought to light into effect. I was only there for one day and came back very moved and inspired. – Alan Levin

DRAWDOWN
https://www.drawdown.org/ Based on the best selling book by Paul Hawken, this group has the optimistic view that the human causes of climate change can be reversed by 2050. They have researched the causes and solutions of climate change with some surprising findings. From their website:
“Drawdown is the work of a prominent and growing community of researchers, climatologists, geologists, engineers, agronomists, biologists, botanists, economists, financial analysts, architects, companies, agencies, NGOs, and other experts who draft, model, fact check, review, and validate all text, inputs, sources, and calculations.
Our purpose is to provide helpful information and tools to a wide variety of individuals and organizations interested in stopping global warming and reversing climate change: students, teachers, researchers, philanthropists, investors, entrepreneurs, business people, farmers, policymakers, engaged citizens, and more.”

Transition U.S.
http://transitionus.org/ This network supports people to organize in local communities, villages, towns, cities, to be resilient, prepare for the expected difficult times ahead and do what we can to mitigate them. They offer a treasure chest of tools gathered from the experience of groups all over the country and world.
Bringing A New World To Life – “Transition US is a nonprofit organization that provides inspiration, encouragement, support, networking, and training for Transition Initiatives across the United States. We are working in close partnership with the Transition Network, a UK based organization that supports the international Transition Movement as a whole.
The Transition Movement is a vibrant, grassroots movement that seeks to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis. It represents one of the most promising ways of engaging people in strengthening their communities against the effects of these challenges, resulting in a life that is more abundant, fulfilling, equitable and socially connected.
We believe that we can make the transition to a more sustainable world. We hope that you will join us.”

I mentioned at the summit that I created a detailed version for how a large county could fully decarbonize in a decade. You can find it on my website below. Comments and suggestions are very welcome as I periodically update this vision.
