Build It and They Will Come: How to Create a Thriving, Progressive Local Community

What’s wrong with our current civilization?

It’s the 21st century and mankind must be the only beings in the galaxy—or perhaps in the entire universe—who have set out to destroy their home world with a system of corruption, decay, and absolutely no logic or sense.

The Earth is home to over 7 billion people, yet very few of us get a say in how our civilization progresses. This is wrong… and it’s time we realized it doesn’t have to be this way.

A future-proof solution must be positive people power—where everyone comes together to actively create a better world.

How can we do this?

We must start to take control over the things that matter. Essentials such as our food, water, power, housing, healthcare, and education must be controlled by local people that form community think tanks and action groups.

Each locality should gather as many folks as possible so they can form a community network that gathers workable ideas and concepts and turns them into reality. We can no longer wait for (so-called) leaders to help us. Now in this century we must start to actively build the type of society we want to live in—one with affordable, green homes, organic food, holistic medicine, and renewable, clean power for ALL people. We must work towards the creation of a fair and just society that is caring, compassionate, and equal. Every human being deserves to exist in a positive manner on the Earth.

There are communities around the globe that are already adopting this type of system. They’re thinking ahead and planning for the future. They’re sustainable!

Some of the concepts already in use are:

  • Local currencies, which work alongside the old economic system and provide jobs instead of unemployment. If the global financial system collapses, these local currencies will still exist. Examples are the Bristol Pound in England; Ithaca Hours in New York State; Toronto Dollars in Canada; and Berkshares in Western Massachusetts, but there are also many other local currencies in use around the world. These monetary systems help the community to thrive. Corporations cannot take this money away from the community. Since the currency is local, it encourages small businesses, which then flourish and take on more staff.
  • Other towns are using barter systems so people can offer their goods or services in exchange for other things they may need. The LETS system is one example. Often communities keep a track of the barter exchanges using computerized software such as Cyclos but there is also open source barter software available.
  • Towns and cities are starting to create food for all. Some are making community gardens where volunteers plant fruits, nuts, and vegetables and those who tend the garden, as well as people who need food to survive, can share the bounty. These gardens can be made in wasteland, kerbsides, or in areas designated by local councils.
  • Making local farmers markets is another way of getting cheaper, local food. If your local producers can sell directly to the people, it’s a win-win. The farmers get better pay for their hard work and the people get fresher food.
  • Towns that take control over their power supply can choose to use 100% green/renewable energy. When every home and building has solar panels on the roof and a combination of wind, water, and wave energy is used, the whole region can go off the grid and stop paying excessive charges to greedy power companies that still use coal.

There are many other amazing concepts that can be implemented in your regions, but they will only be a reality if enough citizens come together and choose to make an alternative lifestyle that can run alongside the old-world ways.

In order to build a workable community, first you must organize a meeting where everyone can evaluate what’s wrong and what’s not working in your best interest. Then you must seek out new ways. If enough people are willing to unite and progress this will succeed. In fact, it’s already happening! Check out places like Lewes in England and other sustainable communities.

The 21st century will be a time of change. There is definitely more turmoil to come. There will likely be a massive economic depression, greater than anything we have ever seen before and there will be more civil unrest in places that still suppress their citizens. However, it doesn’t have to be this way and you can build a better life—one that will withstand the upcoming times—but only if you get a large percentage of your friends, family, and fellow citizens to work in unity, to create a green, clean, harmonious, spiritual civilization.
