When we think of politics, economics, or education, sacred is probably not the first word that comes to mind. And yet, resacralization of our systems and institutions, not to mention our rivers, forests, communities and actions may be what is needed most in this chaotic hour.
(image) Disconnection from the sacred underlies our most wickedly complex problems. When we divorce our actions from a deep-felt sense of union with all Life, competition alone drives ‘progress’. The pursuit of unity – spiritual progress – requires cooperation.
In this newsletter, Glenn Aparicio Parry explains how “many of our (country’s) most cherished precepts were adopted from the living example set by the Iroquois and other northeastern tribes, beginning with the very concept of uniting separate nations, or states, into a larger entity. The model for this was the Iroquois Confederacy.”
You will also learn about an incredibly brave band of performer-activists in, Theatre Against All Odds in Afghanistan. C0–founder, Hjalmar Jorge Joffre-Eichhorn writes that “(spirit)...emerges when the grief of having lost everything is embraced by our indestructible capacity to love and support each other, because we understand that this is the only way for us to stay alive”.
Words born in flames. Let us take heed. (R. Fabian)
Excerpt | A Thin Line, by Anne Haven McDonnell
There’s not much between us
on the sinewy earth. The sky
is an eggshell that keeps us warm.
Things repeat themselves – and then startle
in their newness, the way bones are
rivers for awhile, and then become river
beds with curves and sockets
where life pooled and chewed.
Memory, too, circles back, the thick
resting weight of your hands on me
like a bat wraps her shawl of wings
around the warm planet of her pulsing heart,
the ice-light of stars a breath away.
