Sacred Season | Tolerance Is Not Enough
October 30, 2018 Kosmos Community News
Dear Reader,
This mandala artwork by Kosmos contributor Noelle Imparato captured our imagination. She says:
“This mandala was inspired by the torus, a mathematical model shaped like a doughnut with a small hole at its center functioning as an axis along which fields of energy irradiate and get re-integrated in the compiling complexity of a double vortex that becomes extremely intricate as it builds onto itself layer upon layer ad infinitum. I see the torus as a mythic symbol for the interconnectedness of all life on the planet, and more specifically for the interconnectedness of all citizens of all Nations on the planet.”
Agreed. It reminds me of this line in a poem by Wislawa Szymborska: Dense and intricate is the embroidery of circumstance. I love how each petal of the flower seems to generate energy that ultimately loops back to nourish the flower again. So it is with us. The energy we generate makes the world a heaven or a hell for those we touch – our family and loved ones, neighbors, the world. If only we could see that every thought, every gesture is accompanied by consequence.
The horror that unfolded this week at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh was a heartbreaking expression of hatred. I worry that the toxic energy of separation and fear is eating us alive. In such moments I try to remember that even this dark time shall pass. We have seen darkness before and here are the feedback loops coming around again. Yet, we have the power to dispel them forever. It is still possible.
Tolerance is not enough. Tolerance is the minimum. We can do much better. Like flowers, we can be fresh, open, and shining sources of peace and beauty for everyone around us. We can generate the collective energy of understanding and love.
