The Road Ahead
Signs of resilience and change are appearing at every turn; in every area of human endeavor – law, leadership, economy, education..we surely are a movement of many movements. As 2014 winds to a close, we at Kosmos ask ourselves ‘where next?’ How can we continue to best serve the needs of the Earth, our communities, our readers, and future generations? If only we had a reliable map!
Michael Nagler’s feature in the current issue of Kosmos, Roadmap: A Movement of Movements speaks to this need for ‘a sense of cohesion, such that our diverse efforts add up to a single, unstoppable thrust, and a strategy.’ We are sharing his article in this newsletter. Michael is one of the most respected scholars and advocates of Gandhi and nonviolence worldwide.
And while there are no easy answers to the challenges in Ferguson, Mo., we are grateful to have one of the very best minds in the peace movement working on the new paradigm for justice right here on our staff. Dot Maver offers a possible direction for our broken justice system in her new online column, exclusively for Kosmos Online.
In his ‘The Way Ahead Newsletter,’ futurist and sociologist Kingsley I. Dennis, author of a new book, The Phoenix Generation: A New Era of Connection, Compassion, and Consciousness offers some constructive guidance as well. We share an excerpt.
There is more. While maps are useful, we know that the joy of the journey is the journey itself. It’s important to stop and see the beauty along the way. Frost Flowers are a beautiful natural phenomenon we had never seen before. We thought you might like to see them too.
On any journey, we reflect on the road behind us as well as our destination. As 2014 comes to a close we hope your journey has been nourishing, peaceful and fulfilling. Thanks for sharing the journey with us. Here’s to the road ahead!
With love,
Nancy
Roadmap: A Movement of Movements
By Michael Nagler
PUBLISHED IN FALL | WINTER 2014
We in the progressive movement have been aware for some time that we tend to be ‘siloed’ in our respective niches, whether saving the whales, protesting the 1%, militarism, or what have you. It had become so much a part of how and who we have been, however, that very few of us thought to do anything about it.
Kosmos Response to Ferguson: Restorative Justice – The Way Through
by Dorothy J. Maver, Ph.D.
As people all over the country take to the streets following the Grand Jury decision in Ferguson, one thing is imminently and painfully clear. There is serious unrest and dissatisfaction at the heart of the US citizenry regarding the very system that was designed to keep people safe and secure. And the USA is not alone. All over the world we are recognizing the need for systemic change as we experience an all-systems crisis.
Economics and Politics in the Age of the Phoenix Generation
By Kingsley L. Dennis, from his blog
Innovative change will emerge and provide creative solutions to current economic and political systems in the years, and decades, ahead. Such solutions are likely to emerge from the periphery; from what are known as ‘disruptive technologies.’ That is, creative alternatives are likely to appear as anomalies yet gradually develop to become serious new models. Such emerging alternative forms of finance and politics will gradually unfold over the coming years, yet may not appear overnight.
In terms of economics these new models may include the following:
Frost Flowers: Nature’s Exquisite Ice Extrusions
By R J Evans
It is as beautiful as it is rare. A frost flower is created on autumn or early winter mornings when ice in extremely thin layers is pushed out from the stems of plants or occasionally wood. This extrusion creates wonderful patterns which curl and fold into gorgeous frozen petioles giving this phenomenon both its name and its appearance.
