The emergence of a palpable new sense of ‘We’, a distinctive energy or level of consciousness experienced as available in, and for, collective consciousness is now at least glimpsed by nearly every deeply rooted spiritual practitioner. When first experienced, it is often described as tangibly ‘new’, even ‘visceral’, and sensed as qualitatively different than anything experienced before. Individuals and collectives seem to first recognize it as ‘available’; then they begin to experience it as both ‘Real’ and with an attendant skill set making possible distinctively new abilities and capacities among collectives.

Among myriad others, The Mother (Sri Aurobindo’s partner) announced the availability of this emergent consciousness in 1956. A decade ago, Ken Wilber began writing of the ‘miracle of We’ and Don Beck elucidated long-unfolding patterns. A movement—‘Embodiment’—recognizing transcendent Truth of the Great Wisdom Traditions in every aspect of the physical world, including the human body, swept through the world’s dharma communities. Recently, two nearly concurrent, but very different, bestselling books – scientist Paul Hawken’s Blessed Unrest and dharmaist Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth – further announced this emergence. This same energy is now seen by many as the force infusing the phenomenon of President Barack Obama. Worldwide, ‘the street’ is talking about this phenomenon: ‘Yes, we can’. Circles all over the world are assembling to share this palpable experience and to work on the linkage of new skills now possible among collectives. Inevitably some of these circles have already formed networks of intersecting circles.

It is important to recognize that this energy, this consciousness, this experience, is both the Center and Source of what is currently unfolding. It is the skill set of this consciousness that is paramount, not just its mental aspect, although that is a necessary part—something human habit often forgets.

A skilled collective is now possible for us. This is the core message of our time. But we must also remember that, in this evolutionary process, we are in a glimpsing phase. Because there is no pre-existing map for this unfolding, only the unfolding itself, this new phenomenon is being co-discovered and co-created by each of us experiencing this and actualizing it into our actions and co-actions. This appears to be the root of what is unfolding worldwide in what has been recognized as the Obama phenomenon. It is extremely important that ‘spiritual’ and ‘transformational’ communities clearly elucidate this reality and opportunity for the rest of our world.
