This simple phrase, the national campaign slogan of Barak Obama, now the 44th President of the United States, fast became a global slogan of strength, affirmation and movement. Yes We Can became  Si, Podemos,  ναι μπορούμε,  Да мы можем, and 그래 우리가 할 수있는.  A tidal wave of empowerment rolled out from our shores, across the oceans and overland until it again flooded our native land.  With this simple, yet remarkably powerful phrase, the United States, as well as most of the rest of the world, felt awash in hope, enthusiasm and a mighty energy. What is contained in these three simple words? Ask Kipling what is contained in a grain of sand, in the palm of your hand? Ask Bohr what lies within the tiniest sub-atomic particle? Infinity. Pure potential. The sum of all probabilities. Socrates’ plenum. It’s a statement without borders or limits. It stretches into the far reaches of the Kosmos with a resounding reply in the affirmative. It raises the level of collective power. It promises a future unlike the present. It’s pregnant with possibility.
 

YES:  Yes is statement. A declaration. A purposeful response. An emphatic pronouncement. Yes says NO! to thoughts of doubt, fear, inadequacy. It says, I/we are up to the task. It steps up. It declares responsibility. It knows we can figure it out. It doesn’t shrink.
 

WE:  This WE has a broader reach than perhaps any other time in the history of civilization. This we is all of us. Every one. The collective. It is the whole that is greater than the sum if its parts. It began in the US, but the world took up the call and adopted it as its own. Beyond race, ethnicity, religion and preference, this was the WE of the species. WE the people. WE the humans. WE the family of man/woman. WE the citizens of Planet Earth.
 

CAN:  Can is here. Can is now. Can is not the future - conditional or otherwise, nor does it live in the past. Can is the present. Can does not ask permissions. Can declares. Can states. Can does not want; it is not lacking. Can is ready to act. Can executes. 

YES WE CAN:  The global commitment to a future of choice. To a world by design. To our  world. To the world we inherited from our ancestors; to the world we leave as our legacy.  We’ve collectively answered the unspoken questions of our time: Who? When? Where? What? We. Now. Here...Life.
